Victron Controller Model Numbers

Victron Solar Controller Models Explained

The Victron SmartSolar functions as a solar charge controller designed for off-grid applications including caravans, boats, motorhomes, and remote cabins. Its primary role involves safely regulating power flowing from solar panels into batteries.

This article explains the numerical designations used by Victron SmartSolar controllers, using the MPPT 100|50 model (full designation: 100/50 (12/24V-50A)) as an example.

What does "SmartSolar" Mean?

SmartSolar indicates built-in Bluetooth connectivity, allowing users to monitor charging through a mobile application. Interestingly, Victron's "BlueSolar" lineup does NOT include integrated Bluetooth functionality.

What does "100/50" mean?

100 -- Maximum Solar Panel Voltage

The combined voltage of connected solar panels cannot exceed 100 volts, determined by series-wired panel configurations. Exceeding this threshold risks controller damage.

50 -- Maximum Charging Current

The controller limits battery charging to 50 amps maximum. Even when solar panels generate higher output, the controller restricts delivery to 50 amps. This model qualifies as a "50 Amp Controller" in industry terminology.

12 / 24 V -- Battery System Voltage

This controller operates with both 12V and 24V battery systems.

What this means in real life

  • Higher-voltage solar panels up to 100V total can be utilized
  • Both 12V or 24V battery systems receive charging capability
  • Safety constraints limit charging current to 50 amps
